Historically, 'Crested Caracara' was often used to refer to a broader species complex. The current 'Crested Caracara' (C. cheriway) is now recognized as distinct from the Southern Caracara (C. plancus) found in South America. The two are very similar morphologically, but C. cheriway has a more restricted northern range. Field identification between the two is extremely difficult and often relies on geographic location. The main difference is subtle plumage variations and genetic divergence.

Smaller, paler, and more slender. Predominantly buffy-white with brown wings and back, and a yellow head. Lacks the prominent crest and bold black-and-white pattern of the Crested Caracara. Found in Central and South America.
