Where does the Spangled Cotinga live?

Subtropical/tropical moist montane forests, subtropical/tropical moist lowland forests.

Geographic range

Endemic to the Atlantic Forest biome of southeastern Brazil, specifically from southern Bahia and Espírito Santo south through Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, to northern Rio Grande do Sul.

Preferred environments

Humid montane evergreen forests, particularly in the mid-story and canopy of mature forest, often near forest edges or clearings with fruiting trees. They prefer areas with dense undergrowth and a rich diversity of fruiting plants.

Elevation range

Typically found at elevations between 400 and 1,800 meters (1,300-5,900 feet), occasionally lower.

Where to look

Field tips

1. Listen for calls. The Spangled Cotinga is often heard before it is seen. Learn its distinctive whistle and listen carefully, especially in the early morning or late afternoon.
2. Scan fruiting trees. Focus your search on trees that are currently fruiting, particularly those known to be favored by cotingas. They can remain motionless for long periods while feeding.
3. Look in the mid-story to canopy. This species typically forages at higher levels in the forest. Use binoculars to scan the upper branches and dense foliage.
4. Be patient and observant. Cotingas are often shy and can be difficult to spot. Patience and quiet observation are key to finding them.

Migration

Resident throughout its range, with no significant migratory movements observed. Local movements may occur in response to fruit availability.
