Birds to compare

Hooded Berryeater

Carpornis melanocephala

Key differences

The Hooded Berryeater (formerly also in Carpornis) is similar in shape but lacks the iridescent violet-blue throat and bright yellow belly of the male Spangled Cotinga. Male Hooded Berryeaters have a black head and breast, with a green back and yellow belly. Females are also olive-green but generally lack the distinct yellowish wash on the belly seen in female Spangled Cotingas.

Bare-throated Bellbird

Procnias nudicollis

Key differences

While also a cotinga of the Atlantic Forest, the Bare-throated Bellbird is much larger and has a distinctive bare, greenish-blue throat patch in males. Its plumage is entirely white in males, and green in females, making it easily distinguishable from the Spangled Cotinga's patterned plumage.
