The Black-chested Snake Eagle lives in specific habitats and regions. Knowing where, and when, to look improves your chances of a successful sighting.

Biomes

Savanna, open woodlands, grasslands, semi-desert, and cultivated areas.

Geographic range

Sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal and Gambia east to Ethiopia and Somalia, and south through East Africa to South Africa.

Preferred environments

Prefers open country with scattered trees or bushes for perching and nesting, often near water sources. Avoids dense forests and true deserts.

Elevation range

Sea level up to 3,000 meters, but typically found at lower to mid-altitudes.

Where to look

Savanna and Open Woodlands

Look in areas with scattered trees and open grasslands, which provide both perching sites and good hunting grounds for snakes.

Game Reserves and National Parks

These protected areas often have ideal habitat and higher prey densities, increasing chances of sightings across its African range.

Agricultural Areas

Can sometimes be seen in cultivated lands, especially those bordering natural savanna, where they hunt for reptiles.

Field tips

  1. Scan the Sky. Spend time scanning the sky, especially during the warmer parts of the day, as they frequently soar at great heights while hunting.
  2. Look for Perches. Check prominent dead trees, utility poles, or tall isolated trees in open areas, as they often use these as lookout posts.
  3. Observe Hunting Behavior. If you see a large raptor hovering motionless in the air, it's likely a snake eagle scanning for prey. This behavior is a strong indicator.
  4. Listen for Calls. During the breeding season, listen for their distinctive 'kwo-kwo-kwo' calls, which can help locate them even when out of sight.

Migration

Mostly resident throughout its range, but some populations, particularly in the northern and southern extremes, may undertake local or partial migrations in response to rainfall and prey availability. Juveniles may disperse widely.
