Black-chested Snake Eagle look-alikes

Key differences

The Brown Snake Eagle is entirely brown, lacking the striking black and white contrast of the Black-chested. It is also generally larger and heavier, with a more robust build. Its eyes are also yellow, but its overall plumage is uniform brown.

The Banded Snake Eagle is smaller and has a grey head and breast, with fine barring on the belly. Its underwing pattern is also different, with more prominent barring on the flight feathers and a broader black trailing edge. It also has a more distinct tail banding.

While not typically overlapping in range (Short-toed is largely Palearctic), vagrants or migrants could occur. The Short-toed Snake Eagle has a paler head and breast, often appearing greyish-brown, and lacks the solid black chest of C. pectoralis.
