Where does the Inca Dove live?

The Inca Dove lives in specific habitats and regions. Knowing where, and when, to look improves your chances of a successful sighting.

Biomes

Arid and semi-arid scrublands, deserts, grasslands, urban and suburban areas, agricultural lands.

Geographic range

Southwestern United States (southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas), Mexico, and Central America south to Costa Rica. Its range has expanded northward in recent decades.

Preferred environments

Prefers open areas with scattered trees, shrubs, and cacti. Thrives in human-modified landscapes such as parks, gardens, residential areas, and agricultural fields, especially where water sources are available.

Elevation range

Typically found from sea level up to approximately 2,000 meters (6,500 feet).

Where to look

Field tips

1. Look on the Ground. Inca Doves are primarily ground feeders, so scan open ground, paths, and under feeders.
2. Listen for Calls. Their distinctive 'coo-OO' call is often the first indication of their presence, even when hidden in foliage.
3. Check Water Sources. They frequently visit bird baths and other water sources, especially in arid environments.
4. Observe Flight. Pay attention to birds in flight to spot the rufous wing patches and white outer tail feathers.

Migration

Primarily a resident species throughout its range, though some local movements may occur in response to food availability or harsh weather. Not considered migratory.
