Inca Dove song and calls

Birdsong and calls are often the easiest way to identify the Inca Dove, especially when the bird is hidden in dense foliage. Below is what to listen for.

Song

The primary song is a soft, mournful, two-note cooing call, often transcribed as 'coo-OO' or 'hoo-HOO', with the second note higher in pitch and emphasized. It can be repeated several times.

Calls

In addition to the song, they produce a soft, purring 'hrrr' or 'rurrr' call, often given when disturbed or in contact with other doves. A sharp 'whistle' or 'whistle-wing' sound can be heard during takeoff, produced by the wings.

When they vocalize

Vocalizes year-round, but most frequently during the breeding season. Calls are often heard from perches or during courtship displays.
