Where does the Rain Quail live?

The Rain Quail lives in specific habitats and regions. Knowing where, and when, to look improves your chances of a successful sighting.

Biomes

Grasslands, cultivated fields, scrubland, open country with scattered bushes.

Geographic range

Indian subcontinent, including India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and parts of Southeast Asia (Myanmar).

Preferred environments

Prefers areas with tall grasses, cereal crops (e.g., rice, wheat), sugarcane fields, and other dense ground cover that provides both food and concealment. Often found near water sources.

Elevation range

Sea level up to approximately 2,000 meters.

Where to look

Field tips

1. Listen for calls. The Rain Quail is more often heard than seen. Learn its distinctive call and listen for it, especially at dawn and dusk during the breeding season.
2. Walk slowly and carefully. They are very secretive. Walk slowly through suitable habitat, pausing frequently to listen and scan the ground. They will often flush from very close range.
3. Use binoculars. Even if you flush one, it will likely drop back into cover quickly. Binoculars can help you get a quick view before it disappears.
4. Look after rain. Their activity, especially calling, increases significantly after rainfall, which triggers breeding.

Migration

Partially migratory. Northern populations in India and Pakistan migrate south during winter, while southern populations are largely resident. Movements are often influenced by rainfall patterns, with birds moving to areas with recent rain and fresh vegetation.
