Rain Quail song and calls

Birdsong and calls are often the easiest way to identify the Rain Quail, especially when the bird is hidden in dense foliage. Below is what to listen for.

Song

The male's distinctive breeding call is a loud, clear, and repetitive 'whit-whit-whit' or 'pick-wick-wick', often given from a concealed position in dense vegetation. It can be heard frequently during the breeding season, especially at dawn and dusk.

Calls

Alarm calls are short, sharp 'chip' notes. Contact calls are softer 'chirps' or 'churrs'.

When they vocalize

Most vocal during the breeding season (monsoon months), particularly at dawn, dusk, and sometimes throughout the night.
