Key differences

Giant Petrels are large, but generally smaller than most albatrosses, with a more hunched posture on the ground. Their bills are also large and hooked, but lack the distinct horny plates of albatrosses and have a prominent nasal tube on top of the bill, not on the sides. They have a more direct, flapping flight interspersed with glides, unlike the effortless soaring of albatrosses. Plumage is often mottled brown, and they are more aggressive scavengers.

Key differences

Shearwaters are significantly smaller than albatrosses, with much shorter wingspans. Their flight is characterized by rapid wing beats followed by long glides, often 'shearing' close to the wave tops. Their bills are slenderer and darker, and they lack the prominent tubular nostrils of albatrosses. Plumage is typically dark above and white below.

Key differences

Gulls are generally much smaller, have shorter, stouter bills, and a more buoyant, flapping flight. They are typically found closer to coastlines and human activity, unlike the pelagic albatrosses. Their plumage patterns are also distinct, often with grey backs and white undersides.
