Key differences

The European Wildcat is generally larger, more robust, and has a distinctively bushy tail with a blunt, black tip and clear black rings. Its coat is typically a more uniform grey-brown tabby. Domestic cats exhibit a much wider range of coat colors and patterns, and their tails are usually tapered. Wildcat behavior is also much more elusive and solitary.

Key differences

Considered the direct ancestor of the domestic cat. African Wildcats are typically sandy-brown with faint tabby markings and reddish ear backs. They are generally more slender than European Wildcats. Distinguishing them from feral domestic cats can be challenging, often requiring genetic analysis or very close observation of subtle morphological differences (e.g., tail shape, ear size).
