Field tips

  1. Listen for Calls. Their distinctive soft cooing is often heard before the bird is seen. Follow the sound to locate them.
  2. Scan the Ground. They are primarily ground feeders, so look for them foraging on lawns, paths, and open ground.
  3. Check Low Perches. They often perch on low branches, fences, or utility wires, especially when resting or vocalizing.
  4. Visit Early Morning/Late Afternoon. These are their most active feeding times, increasing your chances of observation.
  5. Be Patient and Quiet. While often tame, sudden movements can startle them. Observe from a distance with binoculars.

Migration

Resident and non-migratory throughout its range. Introduced populations are also sedentary.
