Honchkrow song and calls

Birdsong and calls are often the easiest way to identify the Honchkrow, especially when the bird is hidden in dense foliage. Below is what to listen for.

Song

The song is a complex series of deep, guttural croaks, caws, and whistles, often interspersed with mimicry of other bird calls or environmental sounds. It can be surprisingly melodious for a corvid, but always retains a dark, resonant quality. Often sung from a high perch at night.

Calls

Common calls include a harsh, resonant 'kraa-kraa-kraa', a sharp 'kew-kew', and a low, murmuring 'hoo-hoo' used for contact. Alarm calls are loud, rapid 'krak-krak-krak' sounds. They also produce a distinctive, almost human-like 'chuckle' when agitated or displaying.

When they vocalize

Most vocal during crepuscular hours and throughout the night, particularly during the breeding season. Less vocal during the day, except for alarm calls.
