Biomes
Forest edges, open woodlands, scrublands, grasslands with scattered bushes, agricultural areas, orchards, gardens, and plantations.
Geographic range
Breeds from central and eastern Siberia, Mongolia, northern China, Korea, and Japan. Winters across Southeast Asia, including India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, and New Guinea. Also occurs as a vagrant in parts of the Middle East and Europe.
Preferred environments
Prefers open country with scattered bushes, hedges, and tall grasses, which provide both perches for hunting and cover. Avoids dense forests.
Elevation range
Typically found from sea level up to 1,500 meters, occasionally higher during migration.
Where to look
Open Woodlands & Forest Edges
Look in areas where forests transition to open fields, or in sparse woodlands with good undergrowth.
Scrublands & Bushy Areas
These provide ideal hunting perches and nesting sites. Areas with thorny bushes are particularly favored.
Agricultural Lands & Orchards
Often found in cultivated areas with hedges, scattered trees, and tall crops, especially during migration and wintering.
Gardens & Parks
In wintering grounds, they can be found in suburban gardens and parks with suitable vegetation.
Field tips
- Look for exposed perches. Brown Shrikes often perch conspicuously on the tops of bushes, small trees, utility wires, or fence posts while hunting. Scan these elevated spots.
- Listen for calls. While not melodious, their harsh 'chack' or scolding 'krr' calls can draw attention, especially if they are agitated or communicating.
- Observe hunting behavior. Watch for their characteristic swoop-and-pounce hunting technique. If you see a bird impaling prey, it's almost certainly a shrike.
- Check migration hotspots. During migration periods (spring and autumn), coastal areas, islands, and stopover sites can host large numbers of Brown Shrikes.
Migration
Long-distance migratory. Breeds in temperate Asia and migrates south to tropical and subtropical Asia for the non-breeding season. Migration occurs in broad fronts, often involving significant sea crossings.
