Twite look-alikes

Key differences

The Linnet male has a red forehead and breast in breeding plumage, which the Twite lacks entirely. The Linnet's bill is greyish year-round, whereas the Twite's bill is yellow in winter. Twite has a distinctive pink rump (male), which the Linnet lacks. The Twite's call is harsher and more nasal ('twite') compared to the Linnet's more musical 'chit-chit-chit'.

Key differences

Redpolls have a distinctive red forehead patch and a black chin patch, both absent in the Twite. Redpolls are generally smaller and have a more finely streaked appearance. Their calls are also different, typically a 'chick-chick-chick' or a buzzing 'zweee'.

House Sparrows are generally chunkier, with a more robust bill. Males have a grey crown, chestnut nape, and black bib, features absent in the Twite. Females are plainer brown but lack the fine streaking and yellow bill of the Twite. Their calls are also distinct 'chirp' notes.
