Biomes

Geographic range
Himalayan foothills from Pakistan eastward through India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, and into southwestern China. Introduced populations exist in Hawaii and other locations.
Preferred environments
Dense undergrowth, bamboo thickets, forest edges, and areas with good cover, often near water sources. They prefer undisturbed forests but can adapt to secondary growth and plantations.
Elevation range
Typically found between 300-3,700 meters (1,000-12,000 feet) above sea level, with variations depending on the subspecies and geographic location.

Field tips
- Be Patient and Quiet. Kalij Pheasants are very shy. Move slowly and quietly through their habitat, and be prepared to wait for extended periods.
- Listen for Calls. Their distinctive calls, especially the male's territorial song, can often lead you to their location before you see them.
- Look for Signs. Search for signs of their presence, such as disturbed leaf litter from their foraging or tracks on soft ground.
- Dawn and Dusk. These are the most active times for Kalij Pheasants, increasing your chances of an encounter.
- Use Binoculars. Essential for observing these often cryptic birds from a distance without disturbing them.
Migration
Resident throughout its range; does not undertake seasonal migrations. May make short altitudinal movements in response to food availability or harsh weather.
