Field tips
- Scan open water. Red-breasted Mergansers prefer open water for feeding. Use binoculars or a spotting scope to scan for them, especially where fish are abundant.
- Observe diving behavior. Their frequent diving for fish is a strong indicator. Watch for them to disappear underwater and resurface a short distance away.
- Look for flocks. Outside of the breeding season, they often congregate in flocks, sometimes mixed with other diving ducks.
- Check for crest and bill. Even at a distance, the shaggy crest and slender bill can help distinguish them from other ducks.
