Geographic range
Eastern and south-eastern Australia, from Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, south through New South Wales and Victoria, to the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. Also introduced to French Polynesia (Tahiti) and Hawaii.
Preferred environments
Prefers dense grassy areas, often near water, with scattered shrubs and trees for shelter. Commonly found in gardens, parks, agricultural lands, and along the edges of forests and woodlands. They thrive in areas with a good supply of grass seeds.

Common in suburban and urban gardens and parks, especially those with native grasses and shrubs.

Found along the edges of eucalypt woodlands and open forests with a well-developed grassy understory.

Often seen in pastures, orchards, and cultivated fields, particularly where there are weedy patches providing seeds.
Riparian Zones
Frequently found near creeks, rivers, and wetlands, where dense vegetation provides cover and water sources.
Field tips
- Listen for Calls. Their high-pitched 'tseet' call is often the first indication of their presence, especially when they are foraging in dense vegetation.
- Look in Grassy Areas. Focus your search on areas with tall grasses, especially those going to seed. They spend a lot of time on the ground.
- Check Water Sources. They frequently visit water bodies to drink, particularly in drier periods. Look for them around the edges of ponds, bird baths, or creeks.
- Observe Flocks. Fawn-breasted Waxbills are social. If you see one, there are likely more nearby. Watch for their characteristic undulating flight in small groups.
- Be Patient and Quiet. While generally tame, sudden movements can flush them. Sit quietly and observe, and they will often resume their activities.
Migration
