Noctowl song and calls

Birdsong and calls are often the easiest way to identify the Noctowl, especially when the bird is hidden in dense foliage. Below is what to listen for.

Song

The primary song is a deep, resonant 'hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo' series, often described as a four to five-note hoot, with the first note often slightly drawn out. It can be heard from a considerable distance, particularly during the breeding season.

Calls

Various calls include a sharp 'kewick' alarm call, a 'wup-wup-wup' contact call between mates, and hissing or bill-snapping when threatened. Juveniles emit a begging 'psss-psss' call.

When they vocalize

Most vocal during the breeding season (late winter to early spring) and primarily at night, especially around dusk and dawn. Calls can also be heard sporadically throughout the night.
