Where does the House Sparrow live?

The House Sparrow lives in specific habitats and regions. Knowing where, and when, to look improves your chances of a successful sighting.

Biomes

Urban, suburban, agricultural, grasslands, open woodlands (especially near human habitation)

Geographic range

Native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa. Introduced and established worldwide, including North and South America, Australia, New Zealand, and parts of Africa.

Preferred environments

Closely associated with human settlements, including cities, towns, farms, and villages. They thrive in areas with buildings for nesting and abundant food sources from human activities.

Elevation range

Sea level up to 4,500 meters (14,800 ft) in some mountainous regions, but most common at lower elevations.

Where to look

Field tips

1. Look near human structures. House Sparrows are almost always found in close proximity to people and buildings. Check eaves, window ledges, and dense shrubs around houses.
2. Visit bird feeders. They are frequent visitors to bird feeders, especially those offering mixed seed or millet. They can be quite bold.
3. Listen for their calls. Their incessant 'cheeping' is often the first indication of their presence, even before you see them.
4. Observe social groups. They are rarely solitary. Look for small groups foraging on the ground or perched together.

Migration

Mostly resident throughout their range, though some northern populations may undertake short-distance movements to milder areas in winter. They are not considered migratory.
