Geographic range
Breeds in central Asia, from the Altai Mountains east through Siberia, Mongolia, and northern China. Winters in southern Asia, primarily in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Southeast Asia. Occurs as a regular vagrant in Western Europe, particularly in autumn.
Preferred environments
Breeding habitats include coniferous and mixed forests, birch and willow scrub, and juniper thickets, often near treeline. During migration and winter, it favors open woodlands, orchards, gardens, parks, and scrubby areas, often near water.
Elevation range
Breeds at elevations from 1,500 to 4,000 meters in mountainous regions. In wintering grounds and during migration, it can be found from sea level up to 2,000 meters.

Field tips
- Listen for the call. The sharp 'chup' call is often the first and most reliable indicator of a Yellow-browed Warbler, especially for vagrants in unfamiliar territory. Learn this call well.
- Look for active foraging. These warblers are constantly on the move, flitting through branches and leaves. Watch for small, restless birds actively gleaning insects.
- Check for key plumage features. Focus on the prominent supercilium, double wing-bars, and the overall dull greenish-grey coloration. Note the dark legs.
- Visit appropriate habitats during migration. During autumn migration, check well-vegetated areas, especially those that might attract vagrants, such as coastal scrub, sheltered valleys, and mature gardens.
- Be patient and observe carefully. Warblers can be elusive. Take your time to observe the bird's behavior and plumage details from multiple angles.
