Where does the Quaxly live?

The Quaxly lives in specific habitats and regions. Knowing where, and when, to look improves your chances of a successful sighting.

Biomes

Freshwater wetlands, marshes, slow-moving rivers, ponds, and shallow lakes.

Geographic range

Endemic to the Paldea region, primarily found in its central and western wetland systems.

Preferred environments

Shallow, vegetated freshwater bodies with abundant aquatic plants and invertebrates. They favor areas with emergent vegetation for cover and nesting, and open water for foraging.

Elevation range

Typically found from sea level up to 800 meters, preferring lowland and foothill aquatic environments.

Where to look

Field tips

1. Scan Vegetated Edges. Quaxly often forages along the edges of water bodies where vegetation is dense. Use binoculars to scan these areas carefully.
2. Look for Movement. Their dabbling behavior often creates ripples in the water, which can draw attention to their presence.
3. Listen for Calls. Their distinctive 'quax-quax-quax' calls can often be heard before they are seen, especially in dense cover.
4. Observe Flocks. Outside of breeding season, they are often found in small flocks, sometimes mixed with other dabbling duck species.

Migration

Primarily resident within its geographic range, undertaking short, localized movements in response to water availability or food resources. No long-distance migratory patterns have been observed.
