Where does the Hamerkop live?

Geographic range

Sub-Saharan Africa, Madagascar, and southwestern Arabia.

Preferred environments

Shallow freshwater habitats such as rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, marshes, estuaries, and even artificial water bodies like irrigation canals and rice paddies. They prefer areas with muddy banks and emergent vegetation for foraging.

Elevation range

Sea level up to 1,700 meters (5,600 ft), occasionally higher.

Where to look

Field tips

1. Scan water edges. Hamerkops spend most of their time foraging in shallow water. Look for them walking slowly or standing still at the water's edge.
2. Look for nests. Their massive nests are conspicuous and can often be spotted from a distance in large trees or on structures near water. Observing a nest can lead you to the birds themselves.
3. Listen for calls. Their distinctive 'kek-kek-kek' or 'whaa-whaa-whaa' calls can help locate them, especially when they are disturbed or displaying.
4. Be patient. While not overly shy, they can be cryptic in their brown plumage against muddy backgrounds. Patience is key to observing their foraging behavior.

Migration

Mostly sedentary and resident throughout their range. Local movements may occur in response to changes in water levels or food availability, particularly in arid regions.
