The Channel-billed Cuckoo lives in specific habitats and regions. Knowing where, and when, to look improves your chances of a successful sighting.

Biomes

Tropical and subtropical forests, woodlands, open forests, riparian zones, mangroves, urban parks, and gardens.

Geographic range

Breeds in northern and eastern Australia (from northern Western Australia across the Top End, Queensland, and New South Wales) and New Guinea. Migrates to Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste) during the non-breeding season.

Preferred environments

Prefers tall, open eucalypt forests, paperbark woodlands, rainforest edges, and areas with abundant fruiting trees, especially figs. Increasingly found in urban and suburban areas with large trees and fruit-bearing plants.

Elevation range

Primarily lowlands, from sea level up to approximately 1,000 meters.

Where to look

Urban Parks and Gardens

During the breeding season, they are increasingly found in suburban and urban areas, especially those with large, mature trees (e.g., fig trees) and where host birds like currawongs and magpies are common.

Open Woodlands and Forests

Look in tall eucalypt forests, paperbark woodlands, and along forest edges, particularly where fruiting trees are present.

Riparian Zones

Areas along rivers and creeks with dense vegetation and large trees can be good spots.

Field tips

  1. Listen for Calls. Their loud, distinctive calls are often the first indication of their presence. Learn to recognize the 'kawk-kawk-kawk' call.
  2. Look High in Trees. They spend most of their time in the canopy, often perched high on exposed branches. Scan the tops of tall trees, especially fruiting figs.
  3. Observe Host Birds. Keep an eye on potential host birds like Australian Magpies, Pied Currawongs, and crows. If they are agitated or mobbing a large grey bird, it might be a Channel-billed Cuckoo.
  4. Seasonal Timing. In Australia, they are present during the spring and summer breeding season (September to March). They are absent during the austral winter.

Migration

A long-distance migratory species. Australian populations migrate north to New Guinea and Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Timor-Leste) during the austral winter (April-September) and return to Australia for the breeding season (September-March). New Guinean populations may be resident or undertake local movements.
