Rufous Hummingbird look-alikes

Key differences

Very similar to Rufous Hummingbird, especially females and juveniles. Adult male Allen's has a green back (Rufous male has rufous back). Female Allen's typically has less rufous on the flanks and tail, and the outer tail feathers are narrower. Rufous females often show more extensive rufous on the flanks and a broader, more rounded outer tail feather. Distinguishing females and juveniles often requires careful observation of tail feather shape and extent of rufous on the back/flanks.

Key differences

Male Broad-tailed has a rose-pink gorget (Rufous is red-orange) and a green back (Rufous is rufous). The flight of male Broad-tailed produces a distinctive metallic trill from its wingtips. Females are more similar, but Broad-tailed females typically lack the extensive rufous on the flanks and tail, and have a broader, more rounded tail.

Key differences

Calliope is smaller and has a shorter bill. Male Calliope has a streaky magenta gorget that flares out at the sides (Rufous is solid red-orange). Females and juveniles are generally duller, with less rufous on the flanks and tail, and a more compact appearance.
