Where does the Laughing Dove live?

The Laughing Dove lives in specific habitats and regions. Knowing where, and when, to look improves your chances of a successful sighting.

Biomes

Savannas, semi-deserts, scrublands, agricultural areas, urban and suburban environments.

Geographic range

Widespread across Africa (south of the Sahara), the Middle East, and parts of Asia (from Turkey to India and Sri Lanka). Introduced populations exist in Western Australia.

Preferred environments

Highly adaptable, preferring open woodlands, acacia scrub, cultivated lands, gardens, parks, and human settlements. They thrive in areas with scattered trees and shrubs for roosting and nesting, and open ground for foraging.

Elevation range

Sea level up to 2,000 meters, occasionally higher.

Where to look

Field tips

1. Listen for the Call. Their distinctive 'laughing' call is often heard before the bird is seen. Learn to recognize it.
2. Check Ground and Low Perches. They are primarily ground feeders but will perch on low branches, fences, wires, and buildings.
3. Visit Water Sources. In dry areas, observing water sources in the morning or late afternoon can be very productive.
4. Look in Gardens. They are common visitors to bird feeders and gardens, especially those with scattered seeds.

Migration

Mostly resident throughout its range, though some localized movements may occur in response to food availability or drought conditions. Populations in arid regions may be nomadic.
