Key differences
The African Hoopoe (Upupa africana) was formerly considered a subspecies of the Eurasian Hoopoe (Upupa epops). The key difference is that the African Hoopoe has a black lower back and rump, whereas the Eurasian Hoopoe has a white lower back and rump. The African Hoopoe also tends to have a richer, more rufous coloration overall compared to the paler, sandier Eurasian Hoopoe. The calls are also subtly different.

The Madagascar Hoopoe is endemic to Madagascar and is generally larger and darker than the African Hoopoe, with a longer bill. Its plumage is a deeper rufous, and the black and white barring on the wings is more extensive. Its call is also distinct, often described as a more drawn-out 'hoo-hoo-hoo'.
