African Hoopoe song and calls

Birdsong and calls are often the easiest way to identify the African Hoopoe, especially when the bird is hidden in dense foliage. Below is what to listen for.

Song

The primary song is a soft, far-carrying 'hoo-poo-poo' or 'hoo-hoo-hoo' call, often repeated several times. The pitch can vary, and it's typically a three-note phrase, though two or four notes are also heard. It's a distinctive, mellow, and somewhat mournful sound.

Calls

Various calls include a harsh, churring 'chrr-chrr-chrr' alarm call, especially when disturbed or near the nest. A soft 'whee-oo' may be used in contact calls between pairs.

When they vocalize

Most vocal during the breeding season, particularly at dawn and dusk, but can be heard throughout the day. Alarm calls are given as needed.
