Common calls include a harsh, grating 'ksssh-ksssh' or 'shree-shree', a metallic 'chink-chink', and a more melodious, flute-like 'pee-oo'. They also have alarm calls and contact calls used within the flock. Vocalizations are often given in chorus by a group.
