Uccelli da confrontare

Mute Swan

Cygnus olor

Key differences

The Mute Swan has an orange bill with a prominent black knob at the base (larger in males), and typically holds its neck in an S-curve with its wings often raised in a 'sail' posture. It is generally silent, only hissing when disturbed. Tundra Swans have a black bill with a yellow patch and hold their neck straight, and are vocal.

Trumpeter Swan

Cygnus buccinator

Key differences

The Trumpeter Swan is significantly larger than the Tundra Swan, with a longer neck and a completely black bill (no yellow patch). Its call is a deep, resonant, bugle-like 'oh-OH' or 'ko-HOO', distinct from the Tundra Swan's whooping calls. The bill shape of the Trumpeter Swan is also more wedge-shaped, and the black extends to the eye without a yellow patch.

Whooper Swan

Cygnus cygnus

Key differences

The Whooper Swan is very similar to the Bewick's Swan (Eurasian subspecies of Tundra Swan) in appearance, but is larger with a longer neck. The yellow patch on its bill is typically larger and more wedge-shaped, extending further down the culmen, whereas in Bewick's Swan, the yellow is usually more rounded and restricted to the base. The Whooper Swan's call is a loud, bugling 'whoop-whoop-whoop', similar to a Trumpeter Swan but often higher pitched.
