Biomi
Wetlands, lakes, rivers, estuaries, coastal lagoons, marshes, and slow-moving waterways.
Areale geografico
Northern Hemisphere (North America, Europe, Asia) and Southern Hemisphere (Australia, New Zealand, South America). Specific species have distinct ranges.
Ambienti preferiti
Large, open bodies of fresh or brackish water with abundant aquatic vegetation for feeding, and secluded shores or islands for nesting.
Fascia altitudinale
Primarily lowlands, but can be found at moderate elevations near suitable water bodies.
Dove guardare
Large Lakes and Reservoirs
Ideal for all swan species, especially those with extensive shallow areas for feeding.
Slow-moving Rivers and Estuaries
Provide suitable foraging and nesting habitats.
Coastal Lagoons and Marshes
Important wintering grounds for migratory species and year-round habitat for resident populations.
Agricultural Fields (winter)
Migratory swans, particularly Whooper and Tundra Swans, often graze on leftover crops in fields during winter.
Consigli sul campo
- Scan open water bodies. Swans are large and conspicuous, often visible from a distance on open water. Use binoculars or a scope for detailed identification.
- Observe bill patterns closely. The bill is the most critical feature for distinguishing between white swan species. Pay attention to the distribution of yellow and black, or the presence of a knob.
- Listen for calls. Vocalizations are key for identifying Whooper and Tundra Swans, as Mute Swans are largely silent.
- Look for family groups. During the breeding season and into winter, swans are often seen in family units with cygnets, which can help confirm breeding status.
- Visit during migration. For migratory species, visiting key stopover sites or wintering grounds can offer spectacular viewing opportunities of large flocks.
Migrazione
Northern Hemisphere species (Whooper, Tundra Swans) are migratory, breeding in the Arctic and sub-Arctic and wintering further south in temperate regions. Mute Swans are largely resident in many parts of their range, though some populations undertake short-distance movements. Black Swans and Black-necked Swans are generally resident or undertake local nomadic movements in response to water availability.
