Breeds across much of temperate Europe and western Asia, from western Europe (including parts of the UK, France, Spain) eastward through central and eastern Europe, Russia, and into Central Asia. Winters in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in the Sahel region, and parts of the Arabian Peninsula.

Ambienti preferiti

Dense stands of common reed (Phragmites australis), sedges, and other tall emergent vegetation along the edges of lakes, rivers, ponds, and ditches. Requires areas with standing water or very wet ground.

Typically found from sea level up to approximately 500 meters, occasionally higher in suitable wetland habitats.

1. Listen carefully. Savi's Warblers are far more often heard than seen. Learn their distinctive reeling song. Early morning and late evening are the best times to hear them, especially during the breeding season.
2. Be patient and still. If you hear one, find a good vantage point overlooking the reedbed and wait patiently. They may occasionally pop up to sing from a prominent reed stem for a few seconds.
3. Use playback cautiously. While playback can sometimes elicit a response, use it sparingly and responsibly to avoid disturbing the birds, especially during breeding season.
4. Scan reed tops. Look for movement or a singing bird at the very tops of the tallest reeds, particularly when the sun is low.

Migrazione

Long-distance migratory. European populations migrate south to sub-Saharan Africa for the winter, typically departing in late summer (August-September) and returning in spring (April-May). Asian populations winter further east in the Middle East and parts of India.
