Key differences

Larger and stockier than the Serin, with a much thicker, conical bill. Greenfinches have more extensive green plumage, especially on the wings and tail, and lack the bright yellow face and heavily streaked back of the male Serin. Their song is also distinct, with a characteristic drawn-out 'dweee' call.

Key differences

Found in higher altitude coniferous forests. While also yellow and green, the Citril Finch has a plainer, less streaked back, a more uniform greenish-yellow head (lacking the bright yellow face of the male Serin), and a more prominent yellow wing-bar. Its song is also different, often described as more melodious and less 'jingling'.

A bunting, not a finch. Larger than the Serin, with a longer tail and a more upright posture. Males have a bright yellow head and underparts, but their back is rufous-brown with heavy streaking, and they lack the yellow rump. Their song is a distinctive 'a little bit of bread and no cheese'.
