1. Listen for calls. Manakins are often heard before they are seen. Learn the male's distinctive song and calls to locate them. They can be quite vocal, especially in the early morning.
2. Stake out lek sites. If you can find an active lek site, males will repeatedly return to display, offering better viewing opportunities. Local guides may know these locations.
3. Scan the understory. These small birds typically perch low in the understory. Use binoculars to carefully scan branches and foliage for movement or flashes of color.
4. Patience is key. Manakins can be elusive and move quickly. Be patient and observe an area quietly for an extended period.
5. Look for fruit trees. During non-breeding season, they may be found foraging at small fruit trees or shrubs. Observing these can increase your chances.

Resident; no known migratory patterns. They are sedentary within their tropical forest habitats.
