Eurasian Skylark song and calls

Birdsong and calls are often the easiest way to identify the Eurasian Skylark, especially when the bird is hidden in dense foliage. Below is what to listen for.

Song

A continuous, high-pitched, rapid, and complex outpouring of musical trills, whistles, and mimicry, lasting for several minutes (often 2-10 minutes, but can be much longer). Delivered almost exclusively during its characteristic song flight, often at great heights.

Calls

Common calls include a short, liquid 'prrrit' or 'chirrup' when flushed or in flight, and a softer 'twee-twee' contact call.

When they vocalize

Most vocal from early spring through late summer (February to August), primarily during daylight hours, with peak activity in the morning and late afternoon. Can sing on sunny winter days too.
