Tuim look-alikes

Key differences

The Green-rumped Parrotlet (F. passerinus) has a green rump in males, whereas the Tuim (F. xanthopterygius) male has a blue rump. The blue on the wings of F. passerinus males is typically less extensive and often a paler blue than the cobalt blue of F. xanthopterygius.

Key differences

Males of the Spectacled Parrotlet (F. conspicillatus) have a distinctive blue eye-ring and blue on the bend of the wing, but lack the extensive blue on the primary coverts and secondaries seen in F. xanthopterygius. Females are entirely green.

Key differences

The Pacific Parrotlet (F. coelestis) is found in western South America. Males have a more extensive violet-blue on the rump and lower back, and a more intense blue on the wings compared to F. xanthopterygius. The geographic ranges do not overlap.
