Geographic range
Widespread throughout sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal and Gambia in the west to Ethiopia and Somalia in the east, and south to South Africa.
Preferred environments
Always associated with large bodies of fresh water, including lakes, rivers, reservoirs, and estuaries. Requires tall trees for nesting and perching near water.

Where to look
Lakes
Large freshwater lakes such as Lake Victoria, Lake Malawi, Lake Tanganyika, and Lake Kariba are prime locations.
Rivers
Major river systems like the Nile, Zambezi, Okavango Delta, and Congo River offer excellent viewing opportunities.
Reservoirs and Dams
Man-made water bodies across its range often attract fish eagles due to abundant fish populations.
Coastal Estuaries
While preferring fresh water, they can also be found in brackish estuaries and lagoons along the coast.
Field tips
- Look for Perches. Scan tall trees or dead snags near the water's edge, as they often perch conspicuously to survey for fish.
- Listen for the Call. Their distinctive call is often heard before the bird is seen. Learn to recognize it.
- Observe Fishing Behavior. Watch for their characteristic hunting dives into the water. This is a spectacular sight and a clear identification cue.
- Early Morning/Late Afternoon. While active all day, they are often more vocal and active during the cooler parts of the day.
- Binoculars/Spotting Scope. Essential for detailed observation, especially when they are perched at a distance or soaring high.
Migration
Mostly sedentary and resident throughout its range, but some localized movements may occur in response to water levels or food availability, particularly among younger birds.
