Western Gull song and calls

Birdsong and calls are often the easiest way to identify the Western Gull, especially when the bird is hidden in dense foliage. Below is what to listen for.

Song

Western Gulls do not have a complex song. Their vocalizations are primarily calls.

Calls

A variety of harsh, guttural calls. The most common is a loud, deep 'kyow-kyow-kyow' or 'kya-kya-kya' series, often given in alarm or territorial display. Also produces a long, wailing 'mew' call and short 'chup' notes. The 'long call' is a series of loud, rising and falling notes, often given with the head thrown back.

When they vocalize

Vocalizes year-round, but most frequently and intensely during the breeding season for territorial defense, pair bonding, and alarm.
