Where does the Budgerigar live?

The Budgerigar lives in specific habitats and regions. Knowing where, and when, to look improves your chances of a successful sighting.

Biomes

Arid and semi-arid grasslands, open woodlands, shrublands, and agricultural areas.

Geographic range

Endemic to Australia, found throughout the drier inland regions of the continent. Introduced feral populations exist in some parts of the world, including Florida (USA) and parts of Europe, though these are often unstable.

Preferred environments

Open country with scattered trees and shrubs, particularly areas with access to water sources and abundant grass seeds. They thrive in areas with ephemeral water bodies after rainfall.

Elevation range

Primarily lowlands, up to approximately 1,000 meters (3,300 feet).

Where to look

Field tips

1. Look for movement and listen for sound. Large flocks are often first detected by their constant chatter and the flurry of movement as they take flight or land.
2. Visit after rain. Their populations boom and they become more widespread and active following good rainfall, which stimulates grass growth and seed production.
3. Use binoculars. While often seen in large numbers, binoculars will help appreciate their intricate plumage details and observe individual behaviors within the flock.
4. Be patient at water sources. If you find a suitable waterhole in their range, wait quietly. Flocks will often arrive to drink, especially in the early morning or late afternoon.

Migration

Nomadic rather than migratory. Their movements are largely dictated by rainfall and the availability of food and water. They will travel long distances to find suitable conditions.
