Common Chiffchaff song and calls

Birdsong and calls are often the easiest way to identify the Common Chiffchaff, especially when the bird is hidden in dense foliage. Below is what to listen for.

Song

A distinctive, repetitive, two-note song, often transcribed as 'chiff-chaff, chiff-chaff, chiff-chaff' or 'chip-chap, chip-chap'. The tempo and emphasis can vary, sometimes sounding more like 'chiff-chiff-chaff-chaff'. It is often delivered from a prominent perch within the canopy.

Calls

A soft, plaintive 'hoo-eet' or 'hweet' call, often given when agitated or in contact with others. Also a sharp 'whit' or 'twick' alarm call.

When they vocalize

Males sing persistently from early spring upon arrival at breeding grounds until late summer. Calls are given year-round, especially during foraging or when disturbed.
