Where does the American Robin live?

The American Robin lives in specific habitats and regions. Knowing where, and when, to look improves your chances of a successful sighting.

Biomes

Forests, woodlands, suburban and urban areas, parks, gardens, agricultural lands, open fields with scattered trees.

Geographic range

Breeds across most of North America, from Alaska and Canada south through the United States and into central Mexico. Winters from southern Canada and the northern United States south to Florida, the Gulf Coast, Mexico, and Central America.

Preferred environments

Highly adaptable, preferring areas with a mix of open ground for foraging (lawns, fields) and trees/shrubs for nesting and roosting. Common in human-modified landscapes.

Elevation range

Sea level up to 3,000 meters (10,000 feet) in mountainous regions.

Where to look

Field tips

1. Look on Lawns. Robins are frequently seen foraging for earthworms on open grassy areas, especially after rain or in the early morning.
2. Listen for Song. Their loud, caroling song is a reliable way to locate them, particularly at dawn and dusk during spring and summer.
3. Check Fruit Trees and Shrubs. In late summer and fall, they gather in groups to feed on berries and other fruits.
4. Observe Roosts. In winter, look for large communal roosts in dense evergreens or other sheltered areas, often numbering in the hundreds or thousands.

Migration

Most populations are migratory, moving south from northern breeding grounds to warmer wintering areas. However, some southern populations are resident year-round. Migration occurs in large flocks, often at night.
