A 'sit-and-wait' predator. It stands motionless at the edge of reedbeds or in shallow water, waiting for prey to come within striking distance. It then rapidly extends its neck and stabs its prey with its sharp bill. Diet includes fish (e.g., eels, pike, perch), amphibians (frogs, newts), insects (dragonflies, beetles), crustaceans, and occasionally small mammals (voles) or young birds.
