Omnivore, primarily nuts (especially acorns), seeds, fruits, insects, small invertebrates, eggs and nestlings of other birds, and carrion.

Forages in trees and on the ground. Known for caching large quantities of acorns and other seeds for later consumption, often burying them. Uses its strong bill to crack open nuts. Will visit bird feeders for seeds, peanuts, and suet. Opportunistically preys on eggs and nestlings of smaller birds, though this constitutes a small portion of their diet.
