A low, growling 'arr-uh' or 'grrr-uh' sound, often described as a 'growl' or 'purr'. This call is typically heard within the breeding colony, especially from inside burrows or during interactions between birds. They also emit a soft 'a-a-a-ah' sound.

Mainly vocalize during the breeding season when at the colony, particularly when interacting with mates, chicks, or other puffins, and when disturbed in their burrows. They are largely silent at sea.
