- Longevidade
- Up to 10-15 years in the wild, potentially longer in captivity.
- Dieta
- Carnivore, specializing almost exclusively on snakes, but also preys on lizards, small mammals, and occasionally birds and large insects.
Características físicas
- Plumagem
- Adults have a creamy-white head, neck, and underparts, contrasting sharply with a broad black mask extending from the eye to the nape. The back, wings, and tail are dark sooty-brown to blackish. The tail has narrow white barring, often visible from below. Some individuals may show a rufous wash on the belly or flanks, particularly in the northern subspecies.
- Formato do bico
- Strongly hooked, relatively short, and dark grey to black. The cere is yellowish-orange.
- Cor dos olhos
- Dark brown, set within the prominent black mask.
- Cor das pernas
- Yellowish-orange, with strong talons.
- Características distintivas
- The most striking features are the creamy-white head with a broad black mask, and the dark brown body. Its upright posture when perched is also characteristic. The distinctive 'laughing' call is an unmistakable auditory cue.
- Aparência juvenil
- Juveniles resemble adults but often have a buffier or more rufous wash on the head and underparts, and the black mask may be less sharply defined. The dark upperparts can be duller. The tail barring might be less distinct.
- Mudanças sazonais
- No significant seasonal plumage changes. Plumage remains consistent year-round.
- Dimorfismo sexual
- Minimal to none. Males and females are generally similar in plumage and size, though females may average slightly larger.
Como identificar
- 1
Plumage Pattern
Look for the striking contrast of a creamy-white head and underparts with a broad black mask across the eyes and dark brown upperparts. This pattern is unique among Neotropical raptors.
- 2
Vocalization
Listen for its unmistakable, loud, human-like 'laughing' call, especially at dawn and dusk. This is often the first indication of its presence.
- 3
Perching Behavior
Observe its characteristic upright posture when perched conspicuously on high, exposed branches, often at the edge of a forest or clearing.
Habitat e distribuição
- Biomas
- Tropical and subtropical forests, woodlands, savannas, forest edges, clearings, and open country with scattered trees.
- Distribuição geográfica
- Widespread throughout the Neotropics, from central Mexico south through Central America, and across much of South America east of the Andes, reaching northern Argentina and southern Brazil. Absent from the high Andes and dense Amazonian rainforest interior.
- Faixa altitudinal
- Typically found from sea level up to 2,500 meters (8,200 feet), occasionally higher.
- Ambientes preferidos
- Prefers areas with a mosaic of open and wooded habitats, often near water sources. Requires tall trees for perching and nesting, and open areas for hunting snakes.
Comportamento
- Horário de atividade
- Diurnal, most active during the morning and late afternoon. Often perches for long periods during the heat of midday.
- Hábitos alimentares
- A highly specialized snake predator. It hunts by perching conspicuously on a high branch, scanning the ground below. Once a snake is spotted, it swoops down, often landing on the ground to seize its prey with its talons. It frequently bites the snake's head to kill it, then carries it to a perch to consume it, sometimes tearing it into pieces. It is known to be fearless in confronting venomous snakes.
- Comportamento social
- Generally solitary or found in pairs. Pairs maintain territories year-round. Not known to form flocks.
- Padrão de voo
- Typically flies with slow, deliberate wingbeats, often interspersed with glides. Soars on thermals, but generally not as high as other raptors. When hunting, it can perform agile dives.
- Padrão migratório
- Resident throughout its range; no significant migratory movements are known.
- Territorialidade
- Pairs are territorial, defending their nesting and hunting areas. Vocalizations often serve to announce their presence and territorial claims.
Canto e chamados
- Canto
- The most famous vocalization is a series of loud, far-carrying calls that sound remarkably like human laughter, often described as 'ha-ha-ha-HA-ha-ha-ha-HA-ha-ha-ha-HA-ha-ha-ha'. This call can be given by a single bird or as a duet by a pair, with one bird often answering the other.
- Chamado
- In addition to the 'laughing' call, it also produces a variety of other calls, including harsh 'kraaah' notes, softer 'wup' calls, and a rapid 'kek-kek-kek' when agitated or alarmed.
- Quando vocaliza
- Most vocal at dawn and dusk, but can call at any time of day, especially when disturbed or during territorial displays.
Reprodução
- Estação reprodutiva
- Varies geographically, but generally during the dry season or early wet season. For example, in Central America, it can be from February to May; in Brazil, from August to November.
- Hábitos de nidificação
- Nests in tree cavities, often old woodpecker holes, or sometimes in abandoned stick nests of other raptors or large birds. Nests are typically high in large trees, often near forest edges or clearings. No nest material is usually added to cavities.
- Tamanho da ninhada
- 1 egg (rarely 2)
- Descrição do ovo
- Typically a single egg, rarely two. Eggs are dull white or buffy, often unmarked or with faint reddish-brown spots.
- Período de incubação
- Approximately 45-50 days, primarily by the female.
- Período de emplumação
- Chicks fledge around 55-60 days after hatching, but remain dependent on parents for several weeks to months.
- Cuidado parental
- Both parents participate in raising the young. The female incubates and broods, while the male provides food. After hatching, both parents hunt and feed the chick.
Onde encontrar
Forest Edges
Often found at the interface between dense forest and more open areas, such as clearings, pastures, or agricultural fields.
Riparian Zones
Frequently found along rivers and streams where there are tall trees for perching and hunting opportunities for snakes.
Savannas and Woodlands
Inhabits open woodlands and savannas with scattered trees, providing both cover and open hunting grounds.
Dicas de campo
- Listen for its call. The 'laughing' call is very distinctive and often carries a long distance. Learning this call is key to locating the bird, as it can be quite cryptic visually.
- Scan high perches. Look for it perched motionless on the highest, most exposed branches of tall trees, often at the edge of a forest or overlooking an open area.
- Observe during dawn/dusk. It is most vocal and often more active during the early morning and late afternoon hours.
Espécies semelhantes
Roadside Hawk
Rupornis magnirostris
The Roadside Hawk is smaller, has a different plumage pattern (barred underparts, rufous wing patches), and lacks the distinctive black mask and creamy head of the Laughing Falcon. Its call is a high-pitched 'keeeer'.
Barred Forest-Falcon
Micrastur ruficollis
Forest-falcons are generally smaller, more slender, and have a different head pattern (often barred or streaked, lacking the broad black mask). They are also primarily forest interior birds and have different vocalizations.

Curiosidades
- The Laughing Falcon's scientific name, 'Herpetotheres cachinnans', literally means 'creeping animal hunter that laughs'.
- It is one of the few raptors that specializes almost exclusively on snakes, including highly venomous species, showing remarkable immunity or resistance to their venom.
- Local folklore in some regions attributes its 'laughing' call to a harbinger of rain or other events.
- Unlike many falcons that hunt in open flight, the Laughing Falcon primarily hunts from a perch, using a sit-and-wait strategy.
