Widespread throughout the Neotropics, from central Mexico south through Central America, and across much of South America east of the Andes, reaching northern Argentina and southern Brazil. Absent from the high Andes and dense Amazonian rainforest interior.

Ambientes preferidos

Prefers areas with a mosaic of open and wooded habitats, often near water sources. Requires tall trees for perching and nesting, and open areas for hunting snakes.

Typically found from sea level up to 2,500 meters (8,200 feet), occasionally higher.

1. Listen for its call. The 'laughing' call is very distinctive and often carries a long distance. Learning this call is key to locating the bird, as it can be quite cryptic visually.
2. Scan high perches. Look for it perched motionless on the highest, most exposed branches of tall trees, often at the edge of a forest or overlooking an open area.
3. Observe during dawn/dusk. It is most vocal and often more active during the early morning and late afternoon hours.
