How it forages

A highly specialized piscivore. It hunts by perching on a branch or reed overlooking the water, then diving headfirst to catch small fish (typically 2-10 cm long) or aquatic insects. It can also hover briefly before diving. Prey is usually carried back to a perch and swallowed headfirst. Regurgitates pellets of indigestible bones and scales.

When it feeds

Diurnal. Most active during daylight hours, particularly in the morning and late afternoon.
