Rook song and calls

Birdsong and calls are often the easiest way to identify the Rook, especially when the bird is hidden in dense foliage. Below is what to listen for.

Song

Rooks do not have a complex song. Their vocalizations are primarily calls.

Calls

The most characteristic call is a harsh, often drawn-out 'kaaah' or 'kraaah', which is deeper and more resonant than the call of a Carrion Crow. They also produce a variety of other calls, including softer 'caw' notes, gurgles, and clicks, especially within the rookery. Calls are often given in chorus by large flocks.

When they vocalize

Vocalize year-round, but particularly noisy during the breeding season within rookeries and when gathering in large roosts.
