Asian Koel song and calls

Birdsong and calls are often the easiest way to identify the Asian Koel, especially when the bird is hidden in dense foliage. Below is what to listen for.

Song

The male's song is a loud, repetitive, ascending 'ko-EL, ko-EL, ko-EL' or 'ku-OO, ku-OO, ku-OO' call, often increasing in tempo and volume. It can be heard for long distances, especially at dawn and dusk.

Calls

Females have a distinct, sharp, high-pitched 'kik-kik-kik' or 'whik-whik-whik' call, often given when disturbed or interacting with males. Both sexes may give harsh alarm calls.

When they vocalize
