Yellow-browed Warbler song and calls

Birdsong and calls are often the easiest way to identify the Yellow-browed Warbler, especially when the bird is hidden in dense foliage. Below is what to listen for.

Song

A high-pitched, thin, and often rather weak, repetitive 'tiss-yip tiss-yip tiss-yip...' or slightly buzzy 'tswee-tswee-tswee'. Can be faster and more jangling than other warblers, though it is not a spectacular song. Often sung from dense cover.

Calls

The most characteristic and frequently heard vocalization is a very high-pitched, sharp, and slightly up-slurred 'squeet' or 'swee-ist'. This call is usually given frequently, acting as a key identification feature. Also has a softer, more subtle 'tsee-oo'.

When they vocalize

Calls are given regularly throughout the breeding and migratory periods. Song is primarily heard during the breeding season, but vagrants may occasionally sing on migration.
